Making Event or Flyer Content Accessible

If you have a pdf or an image of a flyer or event info, this alone will not be accessible to people who use screen readers or for someone whose device isn’t loading the image. If someone cannot view the image, then they will lose all of the text content in the image besides any illustrations.

Enter content in the block editor:

  • Enter the informational text directly into the block editor and upload any images from the flyer separately.
  • Write alt text for the images that describe what the image is of, or what the purpose of the image is.
  • For an additional way to view the information, you can turn your image into a pdf or if you already have a pdf flyer, upload it to the Media Library and then on the web page, add a link to the flyer with descriptive text (for example, “Summer Internship Flyer”). This way your viewers will still be able to download and use the pdf if desired. Uploading a pdf, however, does not replace the need for entering the text directly into the block editor.
  • For best practice, if any image you upload has text in it, make sure that text is entered in the alt text field so that a screen reader can access it.
  • Make links descriptive. For example instead of a link that says “click here,” create a link that says “apply for Summer Camp” or “view Camp FAQ.” It’s important that the link states where the visitor will be going when they click on it.
